5 questions to ask yourself when thinking of a Boudoir Photoshoot
Before you even go down the rabbit hole of Googling, asking friends or in a Facebook group, get clear on what is important to you when looking for a boudoir photographer. Otherwise, you are going to to overwhelmed with options and it will be easy to talk yourself out of an amazing experience. Boudoir is intimate, it’s personal and very vulnerable so take the time to ask yourself these questions to help set an outline to finding the right fit.
- Is budget or experience more important to me? If price shopping is more important to you, understand that you will be sacrificing experience. Nothing wrong with that, just consider if it’s worth having a subpar or negative boudoir experience to save money.
- Am I familiar with industry standards? What you assume or hope to invest might not be in line with the industry standard. Get familiar with standards in your area to manage expectations with process and pricing.
- Am I doing this for the right reasons? To Get the Most from Your Experience, understand the importance of doing this for yourself first. That being mostly mentally ready and meeting your photographer half way to key to a solid start.
- What style am I looking for? Have an idea of what style of boudoir photography you like. Create a list before looking at portfolios so you can make sure to check off your nonnegotiable while looking. Look and ask for full galleries, variety in poses and people.
- What do I need from the photographer to feel comfortable? Only you will know what you will need from your boudoir photographer to feel comfortable and confident, so make another list before looking and talking with potential studios to make sure they check your boxes.
5 questions to ask a potential boudoir photographer
Now that you asked yourself the important questions to get clear on what you are looking for, you are better prepared to ask the following questions to any potential photographer.
- What are your rates? What kind of investment should I expect? Some photographers list their starting or full pricing while others reveal it after speaking. Make sure to have the information and clear understanding of what kind of investment to expect so there are no surprises.
- What is your why, mission and/or intention behind boudoir? You have your reasons for wanting to a book a boudoir photoshoot and if it’s important to you that their mission aligns with you, ask them about their why. Having that connection with your photographer will build trust and confidence.
- How do you approach & handle such a vulnerable + intimate experience? Booking a boudoir photoshoot is putting your trust in them so understanding how they approach this experience and their process in supporting you is an important foundation.
- What sets you apart from others? Give your photographer a chance to brag a bit about what they believe sets them apart from the rest.
- Can you show me 2-3 examples of full galleries with diversity? Don’t rely on a highlight reel of images on social media or a website to give you the full picture. Ask to see full galleries WITH diversity to make sure they are consistent with a range of bodies. Viewing a full gallery will give you a better idea of how many images to expect to view, range of poses and experience in working with different bodies. You want to see the big picture!
