“I’m a former midwest girl who settled here in Colorado about 13 years ago. I fell in love with milder winters, friendly people and the view. I’ve been working in mental health since 2008 in a variety of settings, but mainly community mental health. While I loved community mental health and working with the unhoused especially, it’s a system that is a perfect storm for burnout due to how limited my help was inside a large, often oppressive system. My beliefs in the inherent worth of each person regardless of how they look, who they love, what their bodies can do lead me to learn more about Health at Every Size, Intuitive Eating, fat liberation and Body Trust. I’m super into growing vegetables (in my ridiculously sized garden that I still struggle to find enough room in for everything I want to grow) with the help of my dog Toast, paddleboarding, puzzles, and baking.”
How/why did you become a DENVER psychologist?
“As I got ready to head to college I was sure I wanted to go into advertising. I loved the creativity of the field and felt I had a knack for it. However a combination of things really changed my path. First, I realized I’d probably have to create advertisements for products I didn’t believe in or were actively harming people. That didn’t feel great in my soul. The second big change was I was diagnosed with an eating disorder. I knew then I would never be happy working in an industry that was so incredibly focused on appearance.
Once I developed my eating disorder, finding the right care was difficult. I didn’t have a lot of options in the town where I was born, and literally not a single person who specialized in eating disorders. Once I did find care (out of state), it was a game changer. The mental health providers who supported me along the journey to recovery inspired me to pursue psychology. I wanted to give that feeling to others, and help them when they needed it most. I could not have recovered without a lot of people, professional and non-professional supporting me. We aren’t meant to do this work alone, and I wanted to help people find their supports!”
Who can really benefit from working with you?
“Anyone with a body in this diet obsessed world! Honestly though, anyone who has struggled with their relationship with food, body image or disordered eating. Anyone tired of feeling like they have to punish or control their body. We have a lot of systems of oppression that are constantly influencing how we feel in our bodies. Things like racism, ableism, healthism, patriarchy, and others shape our culture and how we come to think about bodies. There is a lot to unpack in this work and a lot to unlearn the beliefs that were foisted upon us without our consent. I help people start to untangle what comes from the culture/world around us from what we know to be true in our hearts, minds, souls, and bodies. Everybody finds different things to be the most helpful for them, and I offer both individual and group sessions to meet you where you are. Whether you want to dive deep into your own personal work one on one or build a community of other folks who “get it” (or both!) I want people to have options! Every Body Therapy is geared towards inclusivity, especially size inclusivity. You and your body are welcome just as you are.”
Most rewarding part of being a Denver psychologist?
“There are so many rewarding parts it’s hard to choose! One of my favorites is watching people re-engage in their life without the chains of diet culture or other things holding them back. Hearing about how someone wore what they wanted, ate what sounded good, or just said “yes” to life is an incredibly powerful thing to witness. I’m so grateful to go along with people on their journey.”
“I’m currently taking on new clients and super excited to share that I am offering two groups. One is an anti-diet support group designed to help you build community on your anti-diet journey. The other is a group focused on building your Body Trust and focused on how to reconnect with your body. You can learn more about the groups on my website on my blog page. https://www.everybodytherapy.com/articles/every-body-welcome. You can connect with me using the contact form on my website if you want to set up a free 15 minute consultation call or to ask any questions you may have. https://www.everybodytherapy.com/contact“
